Is an art piece ever done? Are you satisfied?
I talk with artist time to time and the same comment comes up. “My piece is ready to go to the client but I wanted more time on it!” Another common phrase is “Do you like the way that your painting came out? Are you satisfied with the piece?” As an artist, the answer is, yes. I’m always satisfied with my work. The most satisfying part about being an artist is the fact that you get to bring your idea to life. We see things coming together long before it hits the canvas. My favorite and most satisfying part is seeing the rough sketch of an idea. I'll find myself losing sleep thinking about how my piece is all going to come together after the composition is in place.
The bigger question is always the same one that runs through every creative brain. “Am I done with this piece?” I say that because if it weren’t for us being driven to death by time, we’d likely never take a painting off of our art easels. Well, we would but it’d never leave the door because we’d find another place on the painting to re-work. As we re-work areas we also improve as we continue to work. We end up finding ourselves re-working areas over and over again until it’s as perfect as possible. From a spectators eye, an art piece is almost always done from their perspective long before it’s done for the artist. I don't know how many times that I've been asked “You're not done?” “What else can you possibly add?” And the most common comment "It looks done to me!" As an artist, you must find a place to stop within your work or else we’ll never move on to the next idea to draw, paint or create. Almost every artist will tell you that they see areas where they could’ve done more within the piece that they created. Even if it appears perfect from the customers perspective, we’ll find a spot that could be even more perfect. It’s a blessing and curse.
